Student Summary:
Popular Christian pastor and teacher John MacArthur argues that the first steps in America’s formation, namely independence from England, was “born out of a violation of New Testament principles, and any blessings that God has bestowed on America have come in spite of that disobedience by the Founding Fathers.” While a compelling theological position, this claim overlooks a number of different factors including historical context, a collection of highly skilled and principled individuals, and a legacy that has proven to be unique in its stability. The actions taken by the American colonies seeking Independence from England were consistent with the deep respect the Founders had for scriptural truths, as well as the moral and natural truths that apply to all humankind. Their actions were also justified given the laws of England at the time. Looking at this historical context and the integrity and the care that the Founders took to make their actions righteous and just, give us reason to celebrate not merely the results of this Independence but the actions that were taken to achieve it.
