Three Stages of Study

Going Back to School

One way to shape students and our whole community is for us to spend some time as adults "going back to school" together (something that should never really end). Working through these three levels over at least three years is a great way to enrich our learning community with your input and to find out more about CCA. This will be most fun and productive if you find a group of adult friends to go through the process with you.

Participation is voluntary and does not imply that you hold to any particular view of education or theology but simply demonstrates that you wish to be informed and involved in the life of CCA. This curriculum also makes no distinctions between CCA parents (even for those who are on staff). Anyone interested in contributing to the conversation and serving as a Parent Mentor should sign up.

Requirements at each stage will be subject to minor revisions with each new school year, and all progress on the part of parents will be self-monitored following an honors system. (Obviously, CCA staff have better things to do than keep track of adults at Classical U.) When our first set of parents gets to that point, the school plans to creatively recognize and celebrate each "graduating class" of Parent Mentors. Our hope is that this will provide a fun and substantive way for most CCA parents to encourage each other and our students while learning more about our school.

Apprentice Stage:

Journeyman Stage:

  • Membership in this group will not open until our first Apprentices report that they have finished their requirements.
  • These requirements will follow the same categories as above but involve some slightly more in-depth material (choosing from a selection of short books) and attending some book discussions for example.

Master Stage:

  • Membership in this group will not open until our first Journeymen report that they have finished their requirements.
  • These requirements will follow the same categories as above and are intended to be of about the same level of involvement as the previous year. Our purpose in having a third year of work at the same level is simply to provide time for a layering and reflection upon your experiences before your "graduation" to continue supporting others as a Parent Mentor.
