Student Summary:
The destruction of Brazil’s natural rain forests is a growing and recognized problem. While the slashing and burning of forested lands is highly dramatized by documentaries and news reports, the truth remains that vast amounts of forest have disappeared and been replaced by farms and fallow land. In the short-term, these new agricultural opportunities will greatly benefit their owners, but unlimited depletion of Brazil’s resources will render the land wasted and spent. The problem for conservationists is to develop a solution that will preserve the valuable forest but also provide for ample and sustainable agricultural. These solutions are within reach and with focused research and policy changes, the farmers of Brazil can profit from preservation.
